A manufacturer of industrial electronic components was excited about their newest product. It would leverage the latest surface mount technology (SMT) to deliver best-in-class pick-and-place performance for semiconductor chips.

The bad news was that their designers lacked a good solution for one critical measurement. It was vital that the machine accurately measure the amount of force exerted when both picking and placing each chip. But available components fell short. Space constraints were too demanding, as was the need for durability lasting tens of millions of cycles.

The manufacturer turned to DJ Instruments, whose previous solutions for SMT had included designing our own purpose-built semiconductor bonded foil strain gage at a surprisingly low cost.

In this case, we created load cells specifically designed for the SMT assembly process. Testing showed that it met the customer’s small force (~750 grams) requirements. It also had the projected lifespan to deliver reliable measurement performance for tens of millions of cycles to come.
